Chankanaab

Chankanaab Park, located just south of town, is located within Isla Cozumel’s Reefs National Marine Park and features the only inland coral reef formation in the world. The park is home to the world renowned ecosystem and natural aquarium, Chankanaab Lagoon, with more than 60 species of tropical fish, crustaceans and corals, and the only botanical garden on the island, featuring the most diverse species of tropical plants.  Popular park sites and excursions include Dolphin Discovery, where visitors can swim with the dolphins or simply enjoy the 45-minute dolphin encounter; the Sea Lion Show, an exciting display of stunts and other performances featuring the talents of these lovely mammals; the Maya Zone, a modern-day reproduction of a Maya village, in which visitors can learn about the ancient culture’s building and farming practices; and the Botanical Gardens, a forest cut by trails, in which visitors can identify 350 different plant species, watch exotic birds, or simply bask in the sun. In addition, Snuba and Sea Trek, are two exciting activities that provide opportunities for visitors to view the reefs located near the shore. Colorful tropical fish fill these waters for the delight of swimmers who can almost touch them.

This beach club is a real oasis enjoyed by both tourists and locals.  A unique ambience with activities such as horse back riding and ATV tours.  Weddings are extremely popluar here.

Paradise Beach

Aside from the free admission, Paradise Beach offers two restaurants, three bars, changing rooms, showers, clean restrooms, free beach chairs and free umbrellas.  Also available is snorkeling equipment, kayaks, beach mats, a trampoline, a wide array of beach toys, massage, and henna tattoos.

Playa Corona
Cost:  free entrance
This is a great spot for snorkeling.  If you have your own gear, the snorkeling is free, but there are rentals available.  There is not really a beach here, but a safe pier to use to enter the water for snorkeling.  Besides snorkeling, you can enjoy sand volleyball and the restaurant, specializing in seafood.

Playa Mia

This beach works a lot with the cruise ships that dock at Cozumel.  If you want a relaxing vacation without the congestion of tourists, avoid this beach.  Otherwise, immerse yourself in the Mayan world through the spectacular sunken city featured in Playa Mia.  Experience diving and snorkel at the reefs of Colombia and Palancar.  Enjoy the excitement of wave runners, parasailing, kayak rides, water bikes, a wide banana ride, and the thrill of water skiing or just relaxing in a lazy hammock while the kids play in the playground. International cuisine is served in their modern comfortable facilities.

Playa Palancar

Hours: 9:00am – 5:00pm
This is one of the best beaches on the island, complete with amazing diving (Palancar reef), and a restaurant famous for its fish tacos.  There is a lack of beach chairs here so bring your towel if you plan to lay out and catch some rays.  This beach is famous for a scene in the movie “Against All Odds” with Jeff Bridges, Rachel Ward, and James Woods.

Playa San Francisco

Hours: daily 7:00am – 5:00pm
With a free entrance to the beach, Playa San Francisco has been a beach club since 1970.  It’s complete with a palapa restaurant, bar, pool, parasailing, snorkeling, kayaking, water trampoline, handicrafts, and even massage.  The beach lounges are available for rent.

Punta Sur

Cost: $10.00 entrance, $3.00 catamaran rides
Located at the southernmost point of the island, the Punta Sur Ecological Park is dedicated to the preservation of local flora and fauna.  Plan on spending the day at the park; tour the park’s museum, located in what was once the light house keeper’s house (Celarain), enjoy swimming and snorkeling one of the most beautiful coral reefs in the world, and maybe even join an organized Jeep excursion into the jungle.  There is also a catamaran ride to get a better glimpse of the birds and mangroves.
